Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 caused global transformations in all areas of the Ukrainian economy, and the coffee market in Ukraine was no exception. The impact of the war on coffee was felt not only by producers and importers, but also by end consumers. Disrupted supply chains, rising raw material prices, changes in the assortment and entering new markets became key challenges faced by the industry in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025.

Disrupted supplies and new logistics routes

Since the beginning of the full-scale aggression, traditional logistics routes through which green coffee beans from Brazil, Colombia, Vietnam and other countries arrived in Ukraine have been disrupted or completely blocked. Before the war, about 70% of coffee imports came through the ports of the south - Odessa and Chornomorsk. The closure of the sea gates forced companies to reorient to the western border and use the railway, which significantly complicated and lengthened logistics.

According to a study by Pro-Consulting, the cost of delivering coffee to Ukraine in 2022–2023 increased by 2.5 times compared to the pre-war level. This led to a significant increase in the price of products on store shelves.

The rise in the price of coffee beans: factors and consequences

In addition to logistics, a serious factor in the impact was the global increase in the price of coffee beans. Due to climate change and crop failure in Brazil, the price of green coffee on the exchange reached peak values in 2022–2023. This was compounded by inflation, an unstable hryvnia exchange rate, and rising production costs.

In 2023, the average price per 1 kg of green Arabica purchased by Ukrainian producers reached $7.5–8.2, which is almost twice as much as in 2020. In 2024 and 2025, there was some stabilization of prices, but they remain at a high level, which forces producers to constantly adapt.

Changes in the assortment: adaptation to new conditions

Ukrainian producers were forced to review their product lines. Some brands temporarily abandoned premium varieties in favor of more affordable blends with a higher robusta content or switched to less expensive supplies.

In 2023–2025, many companies began to actively experiment with roasting and their own recipes in order to maintain quality at optimal costs. This gave impetus to innovations in Ukrainian coffee culture and the formation of a unique local product.

Entering new markets: export as a salvation

Despite the difficulties within the country, for some coffee companies, export has become a new vector of development. This is especially true for brands that have achieved sufficient quality and stability in production.

In 2023–2025, there has been an active entry of Ukrainian coffee into the markets of Eastern and Central Europe. In EU countries, interest in local European brands with a strong identity has increased, among which Ukrainian coffee companies are increasingly occupying a prominent place.

The collapse of some brands - the rise of others

Unfortunately, some market players were unable to overcome the challenges of the war. They either closed down due to loss of capacity or could not withstand the financial burden.

However, the Ukrainian coffee market not only survived, but also renewed. New players appeared, offering a fresh approach to coffee: with a focus on local roasting, a transparent history of the grain, social responsibility and a patriotic mission.

Among the examples, we can also mention us: the Ukrainian company Trevi, which was able to restructure logistics, maintain quality and offer an updated range even in conditions of full-scale war. The company actively supports the Armed Forces of Ukraine and remains close to its consumers.

Coffee 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025: a new era of coffee drinking

The last four years have become an era of restart for the Ukrainian coffee industry. Difficult circumstances have forced its players to become stronger, more flexible and more innovative. At the same time, the demand for coffee has not disappeared - on the contrary, in conditions of stress it has become even more necessary.

Coffee in Ukraine in 2022-2025 is no longer just a drink. It is a manifestation of internal culture, aesthetics, a spirit of resistance and faith in the future. The market has not just survived - it is developing, looking for new meanings and offering new quality.
